Emilia Clarke talks food, friendship and life beyond Game of Thrones

Actress Emilia Clarke has shared details of her food habits, new TV role and life after Game of Thrones on the latest episode of Dish from Waitrose.

Speaking to hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, Emilia discussed everything from cooking and dairy intolerance to social media and her upcoming series Ponies.

Food was a major part of the conversation, with Emilia revealing her dislike of Prosecco and her love of martinis.

She also shared a long list of favourite foods, including vegetables, tomatoes, curries, pizza, anchovies and shakshuka, admitting she wrote the list while feeling hungover.

Asked about hangover cravings, she said: “Salt. Anything, salty. Anything and everything salty. Bread, butter – salt.”

Emilia also spoke about discovering she had become intolerant to dairy after years of enjoying it. She said a bowl of ice cream left her in pain for a week and she is now testing whether lactose is the main issue.

The actress described herself as someone who enjoys cooking for others, recalling a Christmas meal for 16 people that included two geese, nine side dishes and three desserts. She said she follows recipes when cooking for guests but prefers to improvise when cooking for herself.

Away from food, Emilia discussed her new series Ponies, in which she was also a producer. Set in Moscow in 1997, the show follows two women whose CIA operative husbands die, leaving them to navigate grief and unexpectedly become spies themselves.

She explained that taking on producing responsibilities meant being involved in all aspects of production and admitted she enjoys being “a bit too busy”.

Learning Russian for the role proved particularly challenging. Emilia described using a detailed memory technique involving stories, images and a “memory palace” to learn her dialogue.

The conversation also touched on The Bear, where Emilia joked she wished she could appear in the show, and her years on Game of Thrones.

She recalled the cast “having the most amazing time” during the first season and reflected on friendships with Sophie Turner and Kit Harington.

Emilia also revealed she was just three years old when she decided she wanted to become an actor, inspired after watching a theatre production where her father was working as a sound designer.
