Google experiments with audio overviews in search results pages

Google has launched a new experiment in its Labs testing space, introducing AI-generated Audio Overviews for certain search queries.

The new feature uses the latest Gemini models to create short, conversational summaries, helping users get a quick understanding of unfamiliar or complex topics without needing to read through multiple links.

When searching in Google, you may now spot a “Generate Audio Overview” button on the results page. After tapping it, a short wait of about forty seconds delivers a fully voiced audio summary, which pulls information from top search results and presents it as a dialogue between two voices for a more engaging listen.

Alongside the audio, Google displays helpful web pages directly within the audio player, so listeners can easily click through to explore the subject in greater depth once the overview ends.

This new format aims to offer a convenient, hands-free way to absorb information, whether multitasking or simply preferring to listen rather than read.

Although only available in the US at the moment, to try it out, opt into the experiment via Search Labs. Google would like users to rate each discussion with a thumbs up or down and share feedback on the overall experiment.

This experiment follows Google’s wider push to combine generative AI tools into everyday search, giving people a mix of spoken and written information. The company says the goal is to help users learn more effectively and naturally by combining traditional search with interactive, AI-powered audio.
