Joel Dommett once worked on security he reveals to season two of That’s a First podcast

That’s a First returns for a second season, hosted by comedians Maisie Adam and Tom Lucy, with their first guest Joel Dommett discussing experiencing some of life’s firsts.

In the podcast, comedian, television presenter and actor Joel covers The Masked Singer, I’m a Celebrity, his time as a security guard and where he took his wife on their second date.

Talking about The Masked Singer, Joel reveals that backstage when they’re not wearing costumes, the singers have to wear a hoodie which says “Don’t speak to me” and a visor so no one can work out who they are.

Joel reckons it’s the best thing he’s ever done: “It’s the best job, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had on any job and I really enjoyed it.

“I don’t know whether lockdown has made me chill out more and appreciate things more and take stock of what’s happening instead of going next job, next job.”

When he was in I’m a Celebrity, Joel thinks that being a “bit of a weirdo” helped him get by in the jungle: “I’m a weirdo in a way where I would sit in the jungle and say “aw I love this, I love being in a jungle and not being fed, this is so perfect for me,” he says.

Joel also speaks fondly of one of his first jobs when he worked in a Virgin Megastore, but really wanted to be a security guard there! He tells the story of how he worked at it and eventually got the job and describes his first encounter with a shoplifter, which didn’t go too well! He says: “That was the moment where everyone on the management team of Virgin realized ‘Joel isn’t supposed to be on security’.”

Also during his chat with Maisie and Tom, Joel talks about the first time he did a prank call, moshing for the first time in ages at a Slipknot concert last year and where he took his wife on their second date, but she ended up talking to Barry Manilow more than him, although it seems might have been Lionel Blair!
