The BFBS military aviation podcast Mavgeeks is back for its fourth series with hosts Gini Carlin and Jamie Gordon.
Mavgeeks is a podcast created by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Gini and Jamie take listeners to airshows, inside hangars and simulators, get up close and personal with aircraft and talk to the people who fly them.
In the first episode, Gini meets Allister Bridger, former Director of Flight Operations at British Airways, who takes listeners through his storied career from fast jet pilot in the Royal Air Force on the F4 Phantom and BAE Hawk to being headhunted as an RAF fast jet instructor, to his transition into civil aviation, and why he took that leap.
The second episode sees Brian Withers, a former pilot on the Avro Shackleton and Hawker Siddeley Nimrod, give co-host Jamie a rare and exciting opportunity to head to Newark Air Museum for a guided tour of their legendary Shackleton. It’s an evocative visual experience captured in spatialised stereo technology, which allows the listener to feel like they are actually in the aircraft with Jamie and Brian.
Next, Gini explores the Duxford Air Show and meets some fascinating aviators. She talks to Master Sergeant Jeremy Hall, who is attached to the US Air Forces’ 351st Air Refuelling Squadron, about the dependability of the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker and its future as a long-standing veteran of the air-to-air refuelling game.
She then meets former Bristol Blenheim pilot and avid restorer of the aircraft John Smith, who recounts his fondest memories of flying the Blenheim, the hairiest moments he experienced in the cockpit, and his involvement with the Aircraft Restoration Company.
