New podcast explores historic global figures from today’s perspective

Legacy is a brand-new original podcast placing historic figures from the past under a contemporary spotlight to explore their lives from the perspective of now.

In a collaboration between Wondery and Goalhanger, the series asks the question: do these figures have the reputation that they deserve?  

Hosted by writer, broadcaster and journalist Afua Hirsch and author and historian Peter Frankopan, Legacy charts the lives of some of the most extraordinary men and women who have ever lived.

Questions asked could be Should Nina Simone’s role in the civil rights movement be more celebrated than it is? When you discover what Picasso got up to in his artist’s studio, can you still admire his work? And why does Cecil Rhodes, a man who died almost 100 years ago, spark such fierce debate today?

The series launches with Napoleon Bonaparte, the military leader and Emperor who died over 200 years ago and is still regarded as France’s most famous figure.

 Afua and Peter explore the impact and legacy of his life, not only on his beloved country but also the world today and ask whether he was a hero who helped shape the modern world or a tyrant who paved the way for the likes of Stalin.

Afua Hirsch said: “We’re living in an age where perceived wisdoms and ideas that have been handed down over generations are being debated in a new light and that is healthy.

“I am excited to have these conversations with Peter as although we occupy different worlds, we share a curiosity in unpicking conventional thinking… and doing some thinking ourselves!”

Peter Frankopan added: “The coming decades will see huge transformation in our lives and that means the sands of the past will shift too in response to some the big questions of today.

“Picking out the key individuals to think about what they did, why they did it and how we should think about that today will be a real challenge but exciting!

“I have known Afua for a long time, and I can’t think of anyone better to debate the big themes of Legacy.”

This is Wondery’s first collaboration with Goalhanger, who have dominated the British podcast charts over the last year with smash hit shows like The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Football, and Empire.
