Podcasters and New Scientist editors Rowan Hooper and Penny Sarchet have relaunched their weekly podcast.
Now called The World, The Universe and Us, the series is for anyone curious about how scientific breakthrough and research can bring context to the world around us.
Each week, Rowan and Penny will sit down with journalists and scientists at the top of their field to discuss everything from the evolution of intelligent life and the mysteries of consciousness to the search for dark matter.
The first episode covers:
- Dark photons discovered? Light is both a wave and a particle – or so we have thought for about a hundred years. But a radical new interpretation brings into question the results of one of the most famous experiments in physics, and indeed, the very nature of light itself.
- Where does consciousness come from? A landmark new study suggests that consciousness isn’t just about complex reasoning – it’s about how we feel the world moment to moment. The world’s leading neuroscientist discusses this.
- Dolphins have a whistle-language. For the first time, scientists have analysed the whistles made by wild dolphins and derived their meanings – you’ll hear the dolphin chat and commentary from a dolphin biologist.
Rowan Hooper says: ”Penny and I are so excited to bring listeners a reimagined version of the podcast that has bought us so much joy and taught us so much over the past five years.
“We love the flexibility, informality and intimacy that conversation brings to science reporting, and sharing our learnings with our curious audience brings findings alive in ways we couldn’t have imagined when we first started podcasting.”
The World, The Universe and Us is out now on all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.
