Roman Kemp and Tom Grennan talk therapy in You About?

The latest episode of You About?, the 5 Live podcast hosted by Roman Kemp and Tom Grennan, sees the pair open up about therapy, anxiety and mental health.

Tom reveals that he’s currently in therapy, often twice a week, saying: “I’m in therapy right now bro, I try to do it at least once a week yeah and if I can then two a week.”

He explains the reason: “I’ve had a lot going on. That imposter syndrome thing has crept in. I think anxiety for me has crept in a lot. My mind’s pretty mental anyway, and for me therapy is very much a place where I can put things back into their boxes and make sense of them.”

Roman adds: “I’ve got my therapist that I really like, that knows more about me than anyone – even my mum and dad maybe. Some of the stuff that I come out with when I do that is amazing, because I think guys in particular have a view of what therapy is. They think it’s really intense, with someone sat there with a clipboard, and it’s not like that at all.”

He continues: “It’s like you’ve got a knot in your shoelaces, and you both sit there and untie it. That person never actually does it – it’s always you.”

Tom also shares how hypnotherapy helped him during a tough time: “This lovely lady, she transported me to my favourite beach in Greece. I could feel the wind on my face, hear the ocean – it was amazing, man.”

Both hosts talk about the fear that often stops people trying therapy. Roman says: “You 100% should try therapy at one point in your life. Even if you still think it’s rubbish after, test it and see. It’s like clearing out your head – like fresh sheets at the end of the day.”
