Sherlock & Co podcast surpasses 20 million streams and downloads

Sherlock & Co has reached a major milestone, surpassing 20 million lifetime streams and downloads since its launch.

The Goalhanger-produced narrative audio drama reimagines Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as a modern true-crime podcast, with Watson depicted as a former British Army doctor turned investigative podcaster.

The series now attracts 800,000 downloads a month, with listeners across North America, the UK, and Ireland. Its audience skews under 30, and many identify as LGBTQ+ or neurodivergent. Nearly 4,000 fans subscribe to its paid membership club, gaining ad-free listening and bonus content.

Launched in October 2023, Sherlock & Co stars Paul Waggott as Watson, Harry Attwell as Holmes, and Marta da Silva as Mariana “Mrs Hudson” Ametxazurra.

The show has cultivated a global fandom through fan art, online forums, and live events, including an upcoming full live show at the Southbank Centre this September, which has already sold out.

Created by Joel Emery and directed by Adam Jarrell, the series is written by Emery and co-produced by Neil Fearn and Jon Gill, with Tony Pastor as Executive Producer.

Produced by Holy Smokes Audio in partnership with Goalhanger, the project marks the company’s first fictional podcast series.

The show has earned multiple awards, including the People’s Voice Webby Award for Scripted Fiction Podcast in 2025, an ARIA Award in 2024, and first place in the Pod Bible Listener Polls 2023 for Audio Drama. It was also shortlisted for “Best Fiction” and “Best New Podcast” at the British Podcast Awards 2024.

Dr John Watson, the series host, commented on the milestone: “That’s right, folks: 20 million downloads… and counting. None of this would have been possible without the listeners. And, I suppose, Mariana and Sherlock as well. Cheers!”

Tony Pastor added: “When I first met John Watson, I wasn’t sure it was our genre. Then I met Sherlock, and within a minute I knew we had to make it happen.”
