Award-winning journalist and producer Kate Mishkin has launched a podcast, Shofar, So Good!.
The series follows her efforts to reconnect with her Jewish heritage. Created through the Jewish Writers Initiative fellowship and supported by the Maimonides Fund, the five-episode series explores universal questions of faith, belonging and community.
“This podcast is my way of reconnecting with a tradition that has shaped my family for generations while navigating the complexities of modern spirituality,” Mishkin said. “I hope to create a space where listeners — regardless of their background — can reflect on their own beliefs and sense of belonging.”
Though her family has deep Jewish roots, Mishkin was raised in the Los Angeles area without a strong cultural or religious foundation.
In the podcast, she looks for answers to questions she never felt comfortable asking — about faith, belonging and the essence of Judaism. Through conversations with rabbis, relatives, and even children immersed in Jewish learning, the series addresses universal topics such as doubt, forgiveness, and the search for meaning.
Rebecca Honig Friedman, Senior Program Officer at Maimonides Fund said: “We were proud to support Kate in the creation of this podcast, which offers listeners an honest, thoughtful, and personal exploration of what Judaism is about.
“Now more than ever, we need creative projects like ‘Shofar, So Good!’ that demystify Jewish experiences and plumb the depths of Jewish tradition for relevance to today’s pressing questions.”
The series also features original music from Grammy Award-winning composer/arranger Nan Schwartz.
A former newspaper reporter, Mishkin’s work has appeared in ProPublica, the Los Angeles Times, and The Guardian. Today, she is a Los Angeles-based audio producer and showrunner whose credits include CNN’s “Very Scary People,” which debuted at No. 1 on Apple Podcasts; Bloomberg’s “Smoke Screen: Deadly Cure”; and “Hello, John Doe” by Morgan Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment.
Shofar, So Good! is now available on all major podcast platforms.
