A new YouTube series extends the world of Smoggie Queens with a character-led chat show format.
The Dickie Show sees Phil Dunning reprise his role as Dickie in a digital-first series made for BBC YouTube channels and iPlayer.
Set in a makeshift studio in Mam’s garage, the show is a mix of scripted comedy and celebrity interviews.
Dickie is joined by familiar characters from Smoggie Queens, including Mam, played by Mark Benton, alongside Lucinda, Sal and Stewart. The group attempt to run the show, often creating disruption rather than helping.
Guests appearing across the series include Rylan, Siobhan McSweeney, Dr Ranj, James Acaster, Vanessa Feltz, Steph McGovern and Russell T Davies.
The first episode, featuring Rylan, was released on 21 April, with new episodes arriving weekly before a break and further releases at the end of May.
Jon Petrie, Director of BBC Comedy, said: “The real test of a great comedy character is whether you can throw them into a completely new world, and they still make you laugh.” He added that the format allows the Smoggie Queens characters to find “even more fun”.
Phil Dunning said: “Giving Dickie his own chat show is crazy behaviour from the BBC. Apologies in advance to all the celebrities he will inevitably offend.”
The series is produced by Hat Trick Productions and forms part of the BBC’s wider strategy to create short-form, personality-driven content for YouTube. The aim is to reach new audiences while also connecting with viewers on iPlayer.
The Dickie Show runs for eight episodes, each lasting around 15 minutes. It arrives ahead of the second series of Smoggie Queens, which returns to BBC iPlayer and BBC Three in May following multiple award nominations and wins for its debut.
