BBC Sounds and Crossed Wires festival strike deal for free Fringe line-up

BBC Sounds Audible and Wondery are teaming up with the Crossed Wires podcast festival, taking place in Sheffield from 4 to 6 July.

Across the weekend, fans will be able to attend live recordings of major BBC podcasts and radio shows including Football Daily, Newscast and Evil Genius with Russell Kane, all for BBC Sounds.

Radio 2’s Book Club will go live with Sara Cox and author David Nicholls, while Rewinder sees Greg James digging into the BBC Archives with a surprise guest.

There will also be special behind-the-scenes sessions with investigative podcasters like Gabriel Gatehouse (The Coming Storm) and Sue Mitchell (To Catch a Scorpion), plus two recordings of Frank Skinner’s One Person Found This Helpful.

BBC Radio 4 will mark 100 years of the Shipping Forecast with a special live show, and Gardeners’ Question Time will also feature in front of a festival audience.

The ground floor of the historic Cole Brothers Department Store will become a pop-up BBC Sounds Fringe venue, and festivalgoers can relax at the outdoor BBC Sounds Garden, complete with deck chairs, a photo booth, food stalls and a bar.

Jonathan Wall, Director of BBC Sounds, says: “We’re delighted to join forces with Crossed Wires as the official fringe festival partner. These will be memorable live shows and experiences that money can’t buy.”

Elsewhere, Audible takes over Sheffield City Hall with Nobody Expects The Michael Palin Podcast! on Friday 4 July, followed by sold-out shows Help I Sexted My Boss and No Such Thing As A Fish.

Dino Sofos, Crossed Wires co-founder, said: “We’re over the moon to be teaming up with  with BBC Sounds, Audible and Wondery. To have three of the world’s biggest audio brands championing our festival is an incredible vote of confidence in this one-of-kind event.”
