Roman Kemp and Tom Grennan discuss kindness faith and impressions

Roman Kemp and Tom Grennan are getting honest about life, kindness and their flaws in the latest episode of their BBC 5 Live podcast You About?.

In this week’s episode, Roman reveals his fears about whether he’s as nice a person as people say his dad is, while Tom opens up about what being a good man truly means to him.

Tom told listeners: “I think for me, to be a good person and for me to be a good man, I need to really look deep inside myself and say, ‘what are actually my problems? What are my faults and how do I build on them to make it better?’”

The pair also talk about how emotions play into kindness. Tom said: “I think being an emotional person is a sign of being a good person because you’re being honest with yourself and you’re not afraid of letting the emotion out. Whether it’s sadness, whether it’s anger, whether it’s happiness.”

Roman admits he often worries about not living up to his dad Martin Kemp’s reputation. “People say to me, ‘do you worry that you have to live up to your dad’s fame and stuff like that?’ No. The thing that I feel like I have to marry up to is people always say to me how nice my dad is… And then I worry, and think, ‘oh shit, was I horrible to someone on a job today?’”

The boys also shared how they deal with bad days and mistakes. Tom said: “I can’t be perfect, and I’ve definitely been a knob once in a while. That’s what I’m talking about, trying to look inside yourself and go, Hmm. Maybe something needs to change and maybe I need to work on that to try and be a better person.”

Religion came up too, as Tom explained: “I believe in God… there’s something where it says in the Bible, ‘treat others the way you’d want to be treated.’”

Roman agreed but added that sometimes he finds it difficult to be that person every day, especially in his job.

The episode also sees Tom talking about how Instagram feels fake to him, while Roman says he’s tried to be more honest on social media, sharing everything from his life to his love of collecting cards.

You can hear their chat, along with Roman’s attempts at celebrity impressions and a plan to prank Romesh Ranganathan, on You About? now available on BBC Sounds and the visualised version on YouTube from 5pm today.
