A new investigative podcast, The Mystery Of…The Omagh Hum, with local presenter and DJ Phil Taggart explores the unexplained noise that baffled his hometown.
The three-part series delves into the strange phenomenon that made headlines in 2023 and left Omagh residents searching for answers.
Taggart, who admits he is no hard-nosed journalist, instead takes a character-led approach, speaking with shopkeepers, musicians, politicians, scientists and comedians.
In the opening episode, he is handed an actual recording of the hum, apparently confirming that the sound was more than just imagination.
Episode two explores theories ranging from the conspiratorial to the scientific, with talk of aliens, turbines and secret military activity.
Taggart turns to Canadian researcher Dr Glen MacPherson, an expert on the so-called “World Hum,” for a possible explanation.
The final episode introduces Jamie Ryan, a local repairman who claims to have discovered the true source of the noise after carrying out his own private investigation. The series also hears from councillors and noise specialists engaged by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
By the end of the three episodes, Taggart draws his own conclusions about the mystery that captured both local and international attention.
The Mystery Of…The Omagh Hum is available now on BBC Sounds.
