A new podcast on BBC Sounds explores questions raised about the truth behind The Salt Path memoir.
Secrets of the Salt Path is an eight-part series that examines the story behind Raynor Winn’s bestselling book, following recent reporting that has prompted renewed scrutiny.
Narrated by Welsh actor Aimee Ffion Edwards, the series presents accounts from people inspired by the memoir alongside those reconsidering their views after claims published by journalist Chloe Hadjimatheou in The Observer.
The podcast looks at the distinction between Raynor Winn and her reported real name, Sally Walker, and asks how elements of the life story were constructed and received.
It also includes interviews with individuals who knew the couple before the book’s success, including members of the Hemmings family, who say they “found out that she’d slowly been embezzling thousands of pounds”.
Contributors also include people who encountered Raynor and Moth during their walk along the South West Coast Path, offering perspectives on how the story was experienced at the time.
The series raises broader questions about authorship and truth in memoir, and the impact on readers who connected with the original account.
Raynor Winn is heard saying: “When you tell a story, the first person you must convince is yourself; if you can make yourself believe it’s true, then everyone else will follow.”
Commissioned by BBC Cymru Wales, all eight episodes of Secrets of the Salt Path are now available on BBC Sounds.
