Crowd Network launches second series of dot com: Redditland

Dot com, the documentary podcast about the people of the internet, is returning for a second series, Redditland.

It sees host Katie Puckrik – star of history podcast We Didn’t Start the Fire – blast open the door on Reddit, the so-called ‘front page of the internet’.

In the popular first series dot com: The Wikipedia Story, Katie explored the complicated universe of Wikipedia, introducing listeners to a fascinating – and sometimes dark – world where communities thrive, and information is everything.

In new series Redditland, the podcast takes on a new corner of the internet: the weird, wonderful and occasionally dangerous network of subreddits.

Katie peels back the curtain on the likes of Gallowboob, the figurehead of the pro-Donald Trump subreddit that was co-opted by alt-right white supremacists, as well as subreddits such as The Mandela Effect and Wall Street Bets, which was at the centre of the 2021 Gamestop short squeeze.

From tales of alt-right Trump fans to purveyors of freedom of speech, the podcast asks whether Reddit is a mirror held up to society.

Listeners are reminded that it’s no coincidence that some of the biggest scandals of the century have unfolded in this corner of the internet, including the 2014 celebrity nude leaks that shook Hollywood, dubbed #TheFappening.

Dot Com: Redditland is the latest podcast from Crowd Network, the audio-on-demand network based in Manchester. In 2022 already, it has launched new series Go Love Yourself, co-hosted by GBBO star Laura Adlington and best friend Lauren Smith.

Katie Puckrik shared her excitement for the new series: “I’m all fuzzed up that doc com is back for a second series, because it’s a great excuse for me to ask all the nosy questions I have about the mysterious nooks and crannies of the internet. This time around I’m looking at Reddit, which is a digital mash-up of the community bulletin board with a town hall suggestion box and a poison-pen slam book.

“Reddit is a home – and a catalyst – for some of the most fascinating, kooky, and downright despicable subcultures. Its impact goes beyond the internet, and Redditland dives into the real-world consequences this community has had – good and bad – over the years. I’m hoping the podcast will be as eye-opening for listeners as it was for me.”

Redditland launches Today, Tuesday 1 February, and available to listen through Apple Podcasts, Spotify and all other podcast platforms.
