New podcast explores huge rise in shark attacks on remote island in Indian Ocean

A new original podcast, Réunion: Shark Attacks in Paradise explores the impact of a huge rise in shark attacks on a remote island in the Indian Ocean known as Réunion Island.

Launched today by Hyperobject Industries, in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment’s (SME) Global Podcast Division, all episodes are available today on “The Binge,” SME’s one stop destination to binge all episodes of new series each month on the day of its premiere.

Hosted by journalist, adventurist, and surfer Dan Duane, Réunion: Shark Attacks in Paradise analyzes how Réunion Island became ground zero for one of the deadliest string of shark attacks in recent years.

Duane also examines how long simmering tensions began to boil over on the Island, forcing local surfers, politicians and business owners into a proxy war with conservationists and ocean lovers worldwide.

Throughout the series, host Dan Duane speaks to locals, including witnesses to shark attacks on the island, and explores the government’s response to the attacks and climate issues that may have led to the increase of incidents on Réunion Island.

“Réunion Island is a deceptive place,” said host Dan Duane, “It attracts thousands of tourists with its beautiful beaches and clear waters, but it is also home to dozens of deadly bull sharks. Réunion Island is unlike any other island in the world, and I look forward to sharing the story of this island, its people and its incredible creatures.”

Executive Producer Adam McKay said, “The story of Reunion Island, where a beautiful surfer’s paradise becomes the site of a multitude of horrific shark attacks, has so many layers to it. In the hands of Daniel Duane, he takes us through a tale of clashing cultures, a world out of balance and of course, heart breaking tragedy. I can’t ever remember any story like it.”
