New podcast launched to raise awareness of unpaid carers
Care fully considered is a new podcast series launched to raise awareness of the issues faced by unpaid carers.
There are three types of people in the world: unpaid carers, soon-to-be-unpaid-carers, and the people requiring the care. Most people in the UK will fall into one or more categories.
Estimates vary but there are currently between six to 10 million unpaid carers in the UK. That number is set to grow significantly in the coming years. More and more people are likely to have to provide unpaid care to their loved ones and will have to take time off work to provide that care at some point during their working life.
Although they help to hold the social care system and the NHS together, unpaid carers are often ignored and pushed into poverty.
Two unpaid carers, Katy Styles, a former teacher and founder of the We Care Campaign and Laura Barnes, a PR executive and blogger, have decided to do something about it to raise awareness of these issues, as well as entertain and inform.
Each episode sees Katy and Laura talking to an expert to get their views and explore what can be done to get the change millions of carers across the UK need.
Katy Styles said: “As a campaigner and founder of a grassroots movement to help and empower unpaid carers to get their voices heard, a podcast had been on my to do list for a while. It is a great medium to create engaging conversations and raise the issue up our collective agendas.”
Laura Barnes added: “Podcasting is the perfect medium to explain the inexplicable situations unpaid carers find themselves in.
“Having previously produced a successful technology podcast, I know what a powerful vehicle this format is to share compelling stories.
“Our aim is to be as inclusive as possible so anyone can listen, be entertained, and relate to the conversations and topics we explore with our guests.”
Nathan Anibaba, founder of the Bridge Growth agency commented: “As a podcasting agency founder, I believe that the right conversations can change the world. Katy and Laura are trying to do just that and I’m happy to help them amplify their voices. I have already learnt a lot and, as their producer, I’m impressed by their natural hosting style.”
Episodes of Care fully considered are available from captivate.fm and Apple.
