New podcast shares powerful stories of Leeds medical research

A new podcast from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust will highlight the people behind some of the UK’s most impactful medical breakthroughs.

Medical Breakthroughs: The Research Journey launches on Wednesday 11 June offering an emotional look at the real lives affected by cutting-edge research, told by the patients and clinicians involved.

The weekly series shares powerful stories of recovery, innovation, and hope from cancer detection and treatment to clinical trials for kidney disease and Parkinson’s.

One episode features Michael Wright, a 64-year-old from York, who took part in a life-saving kidney trial. Another follows Susan, a 67-year-old from Leeds, whose early-stage lung cancer was detected through the Leeds Lung Health Check programme.

The podcast also highlights progress in treating arthritis, breast cancer, and other major conditions, showing how research has transformed patient outcomes.

Since April 2020, more than 120,000 people have joined research studies at the Trust. As of today, there are 1,413 active projects across areas such as early detection, personalised treatment, and long-term care.

Dr Ai Lyn Tan, Director of Research and Innovation at LTHT, said: “This podcast is about more than research. It is about the people—patients, researchers, and healthcare staff whose lives are touched by medical research every day.”

Episodes of Medical Breakthroughs: The Research Journey will be released every Wednesday and available on major podcast platforms and the Trust’s website.
