Stalked is a new true crime podcast that uncovers the story of a young woman’s journey to expose her anonymous cyber-stalker.
Hannah Mossman Moore was a confident and happy young woman until a vicious and bizarre cyber-harassment campaign left her feeling terrified and isolated.
The series is produced for BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds by the award-winning production team behind The Missing Cryptoqueen podcast.
Narrated by Hannah and Pulitzer-nominated journalist Carole Cadwalladr, this is a real-time unfolding investigation about how a stalker used modern technology to infiltrate Hannah’s life. From impersonating her online to knowing her movements, this unknown person left her questioning everyone around her.
Hannah thought a man she met at London Fashion Week a few years before may be behind it, but he said he’d been hacked, which raised even more questions.
Although she reported it to the Police, there was a failure to recognise that she was being stalked. Feeling let down and alone, she sought the help of Carole, an investigative journalist, who happened to be her ex-step-mum, so had known her since she was seven years old.
They teamed up with award-winning BBC producers Georgia Catt and Rob Byrne to try and find out what was going on and who was behind it.
The series explains how the team uncovered a web of deception across continents, revealing that this goes much further than just Hannah.
It also explores of how technology can be used to control, manipulate, and threaten individuals in today’s interconnected world.
Each episode journeys into a land of online deception, the emotional toll of living in fear, and the lengths one woman will go to reclaim her safety and her life.
Talking about the making of the podcast, Hannah Mossman Moore said: “Being harassed and pursued was terrifying and exhausting.
“Working with a team of investigative journalists to finally get answers has been empowering and liberating. I’ve been able to piece my life back together and rebuild my mental health.
“What I want now is for all women who go through this experience to be able to access help and support.
“Stalking isn’t a one-off experience that happened to me; it’s an epidemic. And more often than not, it’s our devices and social media that makes us vulnerable.”
Carole Cadwalladr added: “What happened to Hannah was devastating. It left her isolated and alone with nowhere to turn.
“It’s been a thrill working with the team behind The Missing Cryptoqueen to finally get Hannah the answers she needs.
“This isn’t just Hannah; technology is being used to prey on millions of people and those most at risk are young women. What we’ve learned is that this is an epidemic, technology has enabled predators to act with impunity and it’s vital that we see the police act now.”
The series is made by BBC Studios for BBC Sounds and Radio 5 Live. Series commissioner Dylan Haskins said: “As a premise – there’s nothing like it: A three-year investigation, where the victim, Hannah Mossman Moore, becomes investigator and seeks answers alongside her ‘ex-step-Mum’, the intrepid Pulitzer-nominated investigative journalist, Carol Cadwalladr.
“It sounds like a movie, but Stalked, is alarmingly real and a timely look at a wider issue of public importance.”
The ten-part weekly series of Stalked launches on BBC Sounds from Tuesday 4 February.
