New True Crime Podcast uncovers the hidden world of scam compounds

Spam texts, calls and emails, we’ve all received them, and now a new true crime podcast uncovers the world of scam compounds, and the people conned to live and work in them.

Hosted and reported by Denise Chan, Scam Factory tells the story of one sister’s harrowing journey to free her brother from these ruthless operations. In doing so, she discovered the horrifying reality that the only chance for these people to escape is to scam their way out.

Although this spamming is on the increase, most people are more likely to think of it as annoying and just hit delete rather than reporting them.

The shocking truth is that the person behind that message might be trapped inside one of these scam factories on the other side of the world, where they’re forced to scam others against their will for more than 14 hours every day.

Through first-hand accounts and bombshell revelations, Scam Factory exposes the multi-billion dollar empire of scam syndicates that traffic people with promises of amazing jobs, and their use of disturbing tactics to trap victims in a living hell.

The series follows Charlie, a woman in her 30s from the Philippines who helps her younger brother Max land a dream job abroad.

But when Max arrives, the job doesn’t exist. Instead, he’s trapped in a heavily guarded compound where armed guards have shoot-to-kill orders. For Charlie, the only way to free her brother is to dive deeper into the underworld.

From Wondery, Scam Factory’s reporter Chan is a journalist and audio and documentary producer whose work has earned a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Investigative Reporting, a Golden Mike Award for Best Television Medical and Scientific Reporting, an LA Press Club Award, and multiple Emmy nominations.

Scam Factory launches early and ad-free on Wondery+ on 10 February and will be available everywhere you get your podcasts starting 24 February.
