Nigella Lawson’s Christmas warning for us on The News Agents podcast

Nigella Lawson has a warning for us, which she revealed on The News Agents podcast.

The celebrity cook and food writer says that we should abstain from ‘obscene overindulgence’ this Christmas to avoid becoming ‘a bloated wreck’.

Speaking to hosts Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel, Nigella suggested what we should get rid of this Christmas: “I don’t know why people do starters on Christmas for Christmas lunch. I never have, that seems a madness,” she replied. “But I also think there is a way in which for many people it does become a sort of obscene overindulgence.

“So, people are not eating because it is pleasurable. They’re eating because somehow people feel it is when they should be eating non-stop and picking at things non-stop.”

Nigella added that people often go too far when they want to feel full-up and grateful that they feel full up, but don’t want to be a bloated wreck.

She also revealed that she won’t be giving gifts this year and instead will donate to charity telling Emily and Jon: “I am not interested in this year buying people who don’t need things presents.

“You can give them a card to say I’ve donated in your name in lieu of a Christmas present, so you can feel like you’re doing something. You want to celebrate being with your family in ways that we haven’t been able to, but you don’t want it to tip into the obscene.”

The News Agents were also joined by Michelin star chef Ruth Rogers, who called on the government to provide free school lunches for all children.

Ruth, mentor to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, told the podcast: “I do feel feeding our children should not be a charity and should be the responsibility of the government.

“I think every child in this country, whether your parents have millions or pennies, should be given a school lunch. I think the base rate for qualifying for a free school lunch is shocking.”
