Veteran BBC and Bloomberg journalist Roger Hearing has teamed up with business and finance presenter Phil Dobbie for a new weekly podcast called The Why? Curve.
The half hour podcast looks at current events, supported by facts and numbers.
The first edition, published today, looks at the government’s deal to send some asylum seekers arriving boat to Rwanda.
Roger Hearing says the question of legality is one issue – there’s also the question of whether it’s ethical, and whether it’ll work. Phil Dobbie says the Australian experience of offshoring hasn’t been the success many are suggesting, whilst Mr Alp Mehmet, chair of Migration Watch UK, says something has to be done and it’s one part of a larger package of measures needed to dissuade people from risking their lives crossing the channel from France.
Perhaps the ultimate questions is, if it isn’t going to work, if it isn’t going to stop people smugglers ferrying asylum seekers across the Channel, why do it?
