Podcast listening on Deezer grows by 116% in the last year

Deezer is a streaming service which not only offers 56 million songs, but also radio stations, audiobooks (in Germany and Holland) and thousands of podcasts.

The company says that in the last year, they’ve seen a 116% increase of podcast listening worldwide and by 67% in the UK, with under 18s the age group showing the biggest growth.

Under 18s showed a massive increase in podcast streams of 246% year on year.

Comedy is the most popular podcast genre across all demographics worldwide. There was also growth in language podcasts teaching English across Brazil, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa & the United States. The Espresso English podcast grew by 256% from Jan 2020 to August 2020 alone.

Self-development (including spirituality & religion) saw an increase in popularity in MENA, the US and Brazil, whereas Europe was much more focused on comedy, true crime or news/cultural news.

Deezer’s podcasts and radio are hosted on a dedicated ‘Shows’ tab, while all the music content is in the ‘Music’ tab, making it easy to use the app.

In addition to offering a huge variety of shows and genres, they also create their own exclusive podcast content called Deezer Originals, with Trailblazers being the latest they’ve produced for the UK.

If you’re thinking of joining Deezer to listen to their podcasts, they offer users tips and tricks to make the experience better:

  1. Five Minute Fix: Got a few minutes until you reach your stop? We’ve organized our podcasts by length, so you can find the perfect episode to fill your time. Our “Podcasts by duration” includes all of the top shows in your region, split into four categories: 10, 20, 30 or 40 minutes. Whether you fancy a comedy special or a true crime story, pick a timeframe and you can find your perfect episode.
  2. Studio Quality:  Audio buffs rejoice. With the option to EQ and normalize your audio, you can optimize your settings so your podcasts sound perfect. Boost the mids for some clarity, or cut the top end if the sibilance is getting too sharp. In the app, head to “Settings” and then “Audio settings.” Select “Equalizer” and mix away to your heart’s content. Make sure you also activate the “Normalize audio” setting below, to keep the volume under control. Your EQ settings will stay the same if you switch back to music, so play around to find your perfect balance.
  3. Pocket Dial: This is one for the bluetooth headphones fans on Android – did you know that you can automatically resume your show after finishing a phone call? Under “Settings,” select “App settings” and right at the top you’ll find the option to “Automatically resume music after a phone call.” This feature works for music and podcasts, so when you’re on a run or riding your bike and that unexpected call comes in, you don’t need to worry about fiddling with your phone.
  4. Catching Z’s: If you like falling asleep to your podcasts, you might get frustrated when you lose your place – or even your episode – after you doze off. Setting a sleep timer means you’ll never be too far away from where you left off. Near the bottom of the “Settings” menu, select “Deezer Labs” and then “Sleep Timer.” Pick a time period – anywhere from one minute to a few hours – and you’re good to go (to sleep)!
  5. Top of the List: To skip the scrolling, sort your podcasts to make sure that the episode you’re looking for is always at the top. Click on your favorite podcast on the app, and then select the two arrows next to the search function. You can choose whether you want to prioritize the most recent, the oldest, the shortest, or anything you haven’t played yet. For our iOS users, you can also mark each episode as read or unread, so you have total control over what ends up at the top of your list.
  6. I Heart Deezer: The more you listen, the more we learn. Similar to Flow, our podcast recommendations become increasingly tailored to your tastes as you listen and like. Both “Podcasts for you”, “Your latest episodes” and “We think you might like” are based on your listening history and favorites, so keep tapping that heart button!
  7. Oversharing: If you’ve found a great podcast and want to chat about it with everyone you know, there are lots of ways you can get them to tune in. For social media, you can share episodes to posts, stories or in direct messages, straight from the app. But for something more immediate, you can also send episodes by bluetooth and Airdrop to anyone in the vicinity. So if you’re at work and want to debrief with a colleague on your lunch break, click the sharing button on the episode and scroll down to the bluetooth icon. They’ll be able to tune in on their own account straight away.
  8. All We Hear is Radio Ga Ga: Our Shows tab isn’t just for podcasts. If you scroll to the bottom, you can also find lots of live radio stations for music, news, sports or entertainment. This is the good bit: while you listen, the radio player lets you favorite currently playing tracks or add them to your playlist, so you don’t lose them. You can even launch a track mix for whatever song you’re listening to. So if you want to find new music or just find out what’s going on in the world, click “Stations for you” in the Shows tab and choose between our Music, Talk and Most Popular pages. You’ll also have lots of recommendations based on your previous listening. Radio is only available in France, Brazil, Germany, UK, US, South Africa, Spain, Netherlands & Israel.
9. D-I-Y: If our tips & tricks have inspired you to start your own podcast, don’t forget to submit yours here.  Just provide us with your RSS feed, fill in all the information, and press “Submit.” So long as you tick all the technical boxes (available on our Support pages), you’ll be able to find it on the app in 24 hours! While you wait, download our Analytics by Deezer app. It will give you insights into your audience and performance, and has social sharing options so you can spread the word.
