A new podcast series about the rise and fall of Robert Maxwell hosted by investigative journalist Tara Palmeri and produced by Somethin’ Else is being launched next Tuesday, 12 January.
Ghislaine Maxwell was a fixture of Manhattan high society, a jet-setter, an international party girl, photographed with the rich and famous, friends with princes and presidents. A keeper of her secrets, and theirs.
But even as she sits in a Brooklyn jail awaiting a trial, over a year after the mysterious death of her disgraced partner, billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, she remains a real enigma.
Although, this isn’t the first time that the death of a man in Ghislaine’s life has been shrouded in mystery.
In 1991, Ghislaine’s father media tycoon Robert Maxwell went missing from the deck of his yacht off the Canary Islands. Hours later his body was pulled from the Atlantic Ocean. No one onboard heard him fall. His favourite daughter, Ghislaine’s theory: her father was murdered.
To understand Ghislaine and to unravel the truth, we first need to understand who Robert Maxwell was. In this new 7-part podcast series, investigative journalist Tara Palmeri (host of Broken series two) tracks Robert Maxwell’s rise and fall. A real-life Logan Roy. From his newspaper empire despised by the British establishment, a suspected spy for the Israeli secret service, a fraudster who stole his own employees’ pensions and a fierce rivalry with fellow newspaper tycoon Rupert Murdoch.
The ripples that are still being felt today have roots with Robert Maxwell. What really happened? Tara Palmeri tells the story of a family like no other – a rags to riches to rags again, where nothing was as it seemed.
Speaking about the podcast series, Tara Palmeri said: “Ghislaine Maxwell has been an enigma to me. It’s hard to wrap my head around why a woman with everything in the world — money, power, connections — would allegedly recruit underage girls for a sex offender. And then I learned about her father Robert Maxwell and realised that to understand Ghislaine we had to know where she came from.”
Power: The Maxwells is available weekly from Tuesday 12 January on Apple, Spotify, Acast and all podcast providers.
