The Girlfriends podcast is back next week with a brand-new season exploring how a victim of abuse became imprisoned on a murder charge.
Season three, called Jailhouse Lawyer, launches on 14 July and will follow the story of Kelly Harnett, who says she watched her abusive boyfriend murder a man right in front of her in 2010.
Kelly said she was helpless to stop it and terrified for her own life, but she ended up spending over a decade in prison on a murder charge.
Across eight episodes, award-winning journalist and host Anna Sinfield will explore Harnettโs life in depth, asking the central question: Who is Kelly Harnett?
Kelly describes herself as a dedicated friend and sister, an aspiring DJ and a jailhouse lawyer who taught herself the law while in prison so she could help other women behind bars.
She spent her time in a maximum-security prison fighting to prove her innocence, and fighting for other women who, like her, were victims of domestic violence with tragic and complex stories.
The podcast is not a whodunnit. It examines how the justice system turned a woman who was a victim of violence into a villain in the eyes of the law.
It also asks what happens when the woman at the centre of a true crime story survives to tell it herself.
The Girlfriends: Jailhouse Lawyer is co-produced by Novel and iHeartPodcasts, with new episodes released every Monday from 14 July.
