Concerns over reliability and team instability dominate the latest episode of Global’s Up To Speed podcast.
David Coulthard, Will Buxton and Jolie Sharpe focus on uncertainty across the grid ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, with questions over whether all cars will even make the start.
Will says: “Do I expect every car to make the start in Suzuka? Absolutely not.”
He also highlights concerns around new regulations and engine reliability, with David adding: “There’s just no guarantee of that [reliability] with these regulation changes.”
Discussion turns to team performance, where Aston Martin’s struggles are described bluntly by David, who says: “Aston Martin is a total mess.”
The episode also reflects on leadership pressure within Formula One, particularly as teams face scrutiny early in the season.
David notes: “You’re only as good as your last win,” while also explaining the limits of responsibility for team principals.
Will adds that not all leaders are under pressure, saying: “I don’t think Zak’s under any pressure at all.”
However, he points to growing attention on other teams and figures as results fall short.
The podcast also explores wider industry developments, including Cadillac’s difficult entry into the sport. Will says: “I’ve got more chance of scoring points than Cadillac.”
There is also discussion about shifting narratives across teams, with Will describing “so many different component parts… being meshed together into one evolving narrative.”
Looking ahead to the race, Mercedes is widely tipped to dominate, with David stating: “You’d be mad… to pick anybody other than one of the Mercedes drivers to win.”
Despite this, McLaren is still seen as competitive if reliability improves, while Jolie offers a bold prediction for Haas driver Ollie Bearman, saying: “My wildest prediction… Ollie Bearman ends up on the podium.”
The episode also touches on the sport’s cultural growth, from celebrity interest to links with fashion, alongside concerns that current regulations may limit drivers’ ability to stand out.
