Serving Kult is a radio show and podcast series which is dedicated to hyperpop and queer rave.
The monthly show explores and platforms the music, creatives and community behind the growing UK scene, with a particular focus on female and LGBTQ+ voices.
Created as part of a paid internship at This Is Distorted in partnership with Youth Music UK, it was developed to help young people access careers in the music industry. Interns were given free creative rein to develop a podcast and show with the full support and training from the agency.
The radio show is presented by DJ, rave queen and certified party starter BBY Goose, and will centre around hyperpop and queer rave music produced by female and LGBTQ+ artists. There are also additional sections highlighting other genres popular in the scene including hip hop, hardcore, jungle and breakcore.
BBY Goose is known for taking listeners on an ethereal and euphoric ride through genres like trance, hyperpop, techno, and euro dance.
The podcast will focus on the perspectives of artists, performers, influential voices and the passion of those cultivating the scene from across the UK. It will also highlight some of the challenges the culture faces.
BBY Goose said: “I’m super, super excited to be working on Serving Kult. The queer music scene holds a special place in my heart – it’s something that has really shaped who I am as a person over the years and has been an incredible source of connection and community.
“Last year I organised my own hyperpop event – ‘XTC’, which has been a particular highlight in my music career as it was truly magical to witness firsthand how the queer music scene brings people together – it’s a connection like no other I’ve ever experienced.
“I feel honoured to have this opportunity to celebrate the vast and vibrant musical landscape of the queer community and I’m looking forward to shining a light on the talented and diverse artists that inspire me so much!”
Sol Collins, Distorted intern and radio show producer said: “We’re producing Serving Kult to provide a platform for not only hyperpop and queer rave music itself, but also their respective scenes as a whole.
“We want to highlight the roles of marginalised voices in creating these genres and the communities around them. With one of us already involved in the scene, and the other a newcomer, we want to make Serving Kult accessible to everyone, no matter their musical background.”
Distorted and podcast producer Anya Weston-Shaw said: “The practical side of this internship has been extremely informative; we’ve learnt how to use a variety of software and equipment, as well as gained experience in marketing and design.
“All skills we can take forward into our future careers. Overall, it has tested our capabilities and helped us both improve and given us realistic insights and connections in the industry.”
Released on the first Friday of each month, the podcast series and radio show can be heard on all major streaming platforms and via radio partners in the UK and Europe.
